The Glamorgan Community Centre was opened in 1981 and it was re-named as the Robert McCausland Memorial Community Centre in 2010. Mr. McCausland had dedicated the better part of 13 years to the service of the Township of Glamorgan Council, prior to his death in 1992. Many of the public buildings in Gooderham, including the community centre, exist because of him and his team. Over the years, time had taken its toll on the community centre and its facilities.
Last fall the north side of the roof was replaced, which completed the roof repairs. Last winter, the inside of the community centre was given a face lift, with most of the building's drywall surfaces being repaired and painted. Both the Sports Room and the Refreshment Room were re-modelled, including the relocation of a light switch for better accessibility. Several doors and one of the basketball hoops were also repaired.
Before the end of 2011, the fire alarm system will be upgraded and the outside of the building will be repaired and re-stained. The remaining seven horseshoe pits are also being re-built.
Only the washrooms will remain and they require major surgery to comply with the new accessibilty regulations. The accessibility issue is also a challenge in several other municipal buildings. Unfortunately, the cost of accessibility renovations is high and we are investigating funding options to resolve these issues as quickly as possible.
Part of the municipality's new strategic plan is to improve the marketing and public awareness of what's available in Highlands East. The Robert McCausland Memorial Community Centre and its grounds are an important aspect of that plan.
